Making moments with your kids

A day can be broken down into any number of different metrics; hours, minutes, seconds, etc. I like to think of a day in moments. For this moment I’m working on a blog post. In another moment I may be working on emptying out my email box. In another moment I will be eating dinner with my family, and so on.

Along this line of thinking I’m trying to work in time every day to make a moment with each of my kids. The moment doesn’t have to be long per say, but I think it does need to be meaningful. For example, the other day my three year old was melting down, I took the opportunity to hold her, rock her, and sing to her, we had a little moment that was special while I tried to calm her down.

And I guess therein lies the hard part, recognizing a moment that you want to make into something more than just passing time. I realize now, more than ever, that I need to be on the lookout for opportunities to make meaningful moments with each of my kids. Doing so allows me to connect to them more, and helps them to know how special they are to me.
